Third Generation of Computer

“Third Generation of Computer.”

- All the computers which used integrated circuits as their memory device are classified into third generation of Computers. E.g. IBM series, unique goo etc. In this generation, Technology changes in the pace of transistors replaced by integrated circuits, or ICs. In this generation the first ICs were based on small-scale integration (SSI) circuits, which had around 10 devices per circuit ‘and evolved to the utilize of medium-scale IC, which had up to 100 devices per chip. multifaceted printed circuits were developed and core memory was replaced by quicker, solid condition memories. During this generation period, mouse, keyboard, monitor were developed. Size, cost, power consumed were decreased and processing speed, storage capacity, accuracy were increased.

·        Characteristics of Third generation of Computer.

-         They used IC as their memory component.

-         Processing speed was increased beyond to nanosecond.

-         Comparatively lesser cost than previous generation.

-         Size of the computer was reduced than first & second generation of computer.

-         Smaller & better performance than previous generation of computer.

-         Operating system software were introduced

-         Produced less heat and consumed less power than previous generation.

-         Massive use of High level language.

-         Keyboard and monitor were developed at the first time.

-         More reliable and accurate than previous generation.

-         Small Scale Integration and Medium Scale Integration technology were implemented in CPU, I/O processors etc.
